Newcomer

Upon arriving at Chicago, I felt speechless due to the sudden surge of emotions. I knew I had to be independent as a lone traveler and be wary of my surroundings at all times. A shuttle bus to the hotel was scheduled for me as I will spend my first night there. There was an American family heading to the same destination. The view of the surroundings during my journey was scenic and I felt delighted to finally experience the country in real life.

When we arrived at the destination, I went to checked in but was told that I came to the wrong hotel. I was given a choice. Wait for the next van or travel  about 5 minutes by foot to the other hotel. I decide to take the 2nd option as it provided me the opportunity to experience the outdoors.

The streets were empty. I came across only 3 people during my journey by foot to the hotel. You will not experience this even at midnight in Singapore unless you are at the cemetery.

The room was large enough to fit 2 more people.

I spent most of the night updating my loved ones about my arrival and only slept for 6 hours. I was looking forward to breakfast the next morning as it would be my first meal 10000 miles from home.

I ate another bagel spread with cream cheese as 1 is never enough. I completed the meal with much satisfaction with a beautiful view and vehicles passing by.

I had to pack and leave the hotel for my journey to Purdue University, the place where I will spend most of my time at.

The van accommodated me and a Japanese family back to the airport. I had a very interesting conversation with the driver. He was a Mexican and was very helpful

Driver: Where you’re headed to?

Me: Purdue University

Driver: Great! I used to work there. Where are you from

Me: Singapore

Driver: WOW! Singapore is a very clean country. I almost had the chance to visit there.

He told me that his friend had an extra ticket to Singapore for a job offer and he was asked to spend a vacation together. The job got cancelled at a last minute and there goes the opportunity. It is very interesting to meet such a person who desire to travel to your country. Shortly afterwards, I asked him about places to visit in Chicago and he listed a few places. He went the extra mile by telling me to call him at the hotel when I am there. I felt amazed by his gestures. He agreed to let me take a photo of him and Jr, his 5 year old son.2015-08-18 10.30.36 HDR

I gave him a small tip as a token of appreciation and a custom trait.
