Sense Dependency

Humans are extremely reliant on the five senses. It would be detrimental to us if one of them were to stop functioning.

We develop impressions of the external world by using a combination of our senses. There are certain tasks which would only require just one of the senses. Let us narrow down to a fundamental human need by asking a question.

Does food taste less appealing if we are blindfolded?

In our current era, the concept of food is being revolutionised into a certain form of luxury rather than just a means to survive. There are plenty of options out there & it is almost unheard of to run out of food options, especially if you are living in a city.

Let’s do a simple thought experiment. Recall the best dish/dessert you had over the past week. Would your impression change if you were to consume the dish blindfolded?

Time to put on our thinking caps for the next experiment.
A restaurant prepares 3 different desserts with a Michelin star rating. The difference however, is the way it looks.

  • Dessert A: Looks very appealing
  • Dessert B: Like any other dessert
  • Dessert C: Not appealing

10 dessert enthusiasts were invited to take part in the experiment without any prior knowledge.

  1. Separate them into 2 groups.
  2. First group will be blindfolded
  3. Each person will taste all 3 desserts
  4. Give a rating for all 3 desserts
  5. Compare results of both groups

From the experiment, the 2 results below could be easily predicted.

  • 1st group(blindfolded) should give a similar rating for the 3 dishes
  • 2nd group(not blindfolded) will have different ratings for the 3 dishes

Before proceeding, let us discuss the different types of senses involved in the decision making for both of the groups.

  • The first group could only rely on their sense of taste & smell.
  • The second group can also rely on their sense of sight, on top of the 2 senses.

So does food taste less appealing if we are blindfolded?
I believe the answer could be both Yes & No, depending on its appearance.
We can look back on the experiment to deduce a conclusion.
The first group would give a lower rating to Dessert A but a higher rating for Dessert C.

Bonus question: Is the sound of food important to us?

Time to take off those thinking caps.
That’s all folks.
