This is a non-binary topic. Every decision and opportunity is based on various factors.
There are 3 main social circles that are present today.
1. Wealthy
2. Educated
3. Majority
Although there are many other ways to describe the different social groups, most are irrelevant(E.g: a tall person is not better or better off than others in the society)
SOCIAL DEFINITIONS
Wealthy:
1. Having an income that can support 2 or more persons.
2. Being able to survive without an income for a year
Note: Owning cars / properties is not a reliable definition as a person can be wealthy without owning them. In other words, wealth is a measure of what a person can afford to own.
Educated:
1. People with a degree
2. People who qualify for a degree but chose to build a company (Bill Gates / Steve Jobs)
Note
They are many smart intellectuals out there without a degree. They will not experience Privilege 2 because having a degree is the ticket to a better career & social status for some communities.
Majority: In most countries, the majority race make up >50% of the population. A country may have more than 1 minority race. Privilege is usually split into two groups. The 1 majority race & all other minority races.
Note
A multiracial person with a parent belonging to the majority can be considered a majority only if they are not denied any privileges given to the majority.
The 3 Privileges are not 100% correlated to each other.
Common misconceptions include:
1. The minority are poor
2. The wealthy are educated
3. The educated are wealthy
TYPES OF PEOPLE
- ALL PRIVILEGES: 111(WEM)
- TWO PRIVILEGES: 110(WE), 101(WM), 011(EM)
- ONE PRIVILEGE: 100(W), 010(E), 001(M)
- ZERO PRIVILEGE: 000(Others)
Note
- Positions are not permanent(except for Privilege 3)
- Only 000 & 001 can gain at most 2 privileges during their lifetime
- It is possible, but extremely rare to lose a privilege(Privilege 1 Only)
- The type of privilege matters( 100 > 001 / 110 > 101 )
- Nobody is born with Privilege 2(A baby is not educated)
SOCIAL RANKING
- WEM
- WE
- WM
- EM
- W
- E
- M
- Others
The diagram is for illustration purposes. The amount of people in each section is not a reflection of its size in the diagram.
Note:
- “Others” refer to those with 0 privileges.
- The ranking is not a measure of who is better. It is an indicator of who is better off.
- Being born with privileges require zero effort.
- A higher rank doesn’t equate to more happiness.
- The distribution of people in each section (also known as inequality) varies across different countries.
SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
- The ultimate goal is to attain Privilege 1
- It is very uncommon to seek Privilege 2 after attaining Privilege 1
- The majority from 011/010 will eventually gain Privilege 1
- Culture/Tradition plays a part in attaining Privilege 1 & 2
- In certain societies, being educated is a status symbol.
- The policies in a country play a major role in closing the gap
(E.g: Free education for the minority/poor)
SOCIAL PATHS
- 101 —> 111
- 100 —> 110
- 001 —> 011—> 111
- 001 —> 101
- 001 —> 101 —> 111
- 000 —> 010 —> 110
- 000 —> 100
- 000 —> 100 —> 110
The path taken by an individual is dependent on family background. Being born with wealthy & educated parents would almost guarantee the child becoming educated.
Education is a worthy investment for most people as it is the most common method to earn Privilege 1.
Disclaimer:
Ovarian Lottery is a natural phenomena. Nobody chooses the place and which family there are born into. A person’s worth is not based on their standing in the social ranking. Making associations such as “Poor people are lazy” is synonymous to “All bears are white.” There are many examples of outliers who climb the social ranking with limited resources at their disposal. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with being contented with just 1 or zero privileges.
We can’t blame the (Wealthy/Poor) for having (Lavish/Frugal) lifestyles because they didn’t choose to be born into such families with the upbringing that defines their habits. Any other human would find it a challenge to (Downgrade/Upgrade) their lifestyle. Nobody has the right to hate or judge either groups for their circumstances. Instead, we should create a bridge & inculcate a positive & growth mindset no matter which position we are born in.
